Hello, World!

Post by hydralisk98 » Mon Aug 12, 2019 12:21 am

Hello, World!

My name is Olyvier, I am 20 years old and I live nearby Montreal.
It seems that I am the first non-insider here so let me explain how I got here.
I watched a handful of times "TheBurgerkrieg" 's Talespinner video but only somewhat really investing myself today.
I have some experience as a (D&D 5E) TTRPG player and willing to GM a brand new campaign using Talespinner.
Besides, I have many special interests like drawing and conlanging.

Thank you for reading.

Hello, Olyvier!
Welcome to the board! You are, indeed, our first 'outsider!' Considering your DnD experience, that means you're some sort of divine extraplanar being, right? ;)
It's great to have you!

If you don't mind me asking: What's your favourite genre to roleplay in, so far?

Anyway; I hope you'll have fun trying the system! Updates are happening per Patch Notes, and I'm currently working on a setting 'module' on WorldAnvil: Ardoon, in case you're interested. :)

Really cool you are willing to take Talespinner out for a spin (punintended)!
If you have any questions, do let us know ;)
Have fun!
What? Magic skills? You just need one: Chronomancy...
Maybe Chronomancy AND Pyromancy ... :P
Chronomancy though <3
Nah. Who am I kidding?
Chronomancy and Illusion.

Thanks for the feedback folks,
as of now, I am still seeking for a group to play / GM for Talespinner.

I looked at https://www.worldanvil.com/w/ardoon-joost-huttenga, seems like a good setting although not one I wanna play with.
I did like to play within a medieval-fantasy setting, but I currently prefer to craft my very own modern setting as it encourages me to build up a entire stellar system and Earth-like history to better immerse myself and my players. :)

Yes, I am that person on Twitter:

I do need some help to learn the system however, as I have some difficulty to understand the basics of character creation and how to actually play the game. I may also try it out solo too, using whatever GM emulator I will eventually get to use first.

Heya!
The simplest method of character creation I can share is... Pick six skills you think sound great, read if they have any synergies (mentioned in the skill overview), and look at what attributes they need, primarily (also mentioned in the skill overview). Then, according to what you picked, you choose your attributes: 2, 2, 1. Place them in the order of [Fit], [Nim] and [Wit] that you prefer, and you have the basic character.
Then spend 100 Crowns on equipment for your skills in the Equipment section.

(Example character: Guard. Armour 2, Shields 2, Polearms 2, Perception 2, Arbalism 2, Athletics 2. [Fit] 2, [Nim] 2, [Wit] 1.)

Your avoidance is 5+[Nim]. Your Defense is your Armour skill rank, plus any modifiers granted by other skills (such as a shield or a sword skill). Your Absorb value is either your armour's max value or your [Fit], whichever is lower. And your Conversion value depends on your armour's quality grade (1 value at #3, 2 value at #4, 3 value at #5).

(With a #2 shield, this character would have an Avoidance of 8 with the shield equipped; 7 when not. With the shield equipped, the character would have an Armour Defense value of 3; without it the value is 2; this is because of your shield skill ranks rather than a passive bonus granted by the shield.
And with a cheap #3 light armour, the Absorb value is 2 and Conversion value is 1.

#3 Light Armour: Costs 27 Cr.
#2 Shortspear (one-handed): Costs 8 Cr.
#2 Crossbow (two-handed): Costs 16 Cr.
#2 Shield: Costs 8 Cr.
Total money spent: 59 Cr; 49 left to spend on other things (or buy higher quality starting gear).)

That is all you need for a customized basic character.
You can juggle a lot by using the 30-point method and buying talents/afflictions, specialist skills, tricks, strikes and spells and buying skills at a single rank.
Alternatively, you can find a few slightly more complex but very easy character builds here:
https://talespinner.eu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=10

For a very simple overview on the basics of the game is here:
https://talespinner.eu/general/cheat-sheet#top

The 'How to Play' chapter (https://talespinner.eu/general/how-to-play#top) goes into detail with things like Actions (everyone normally has 2 move actions and 1 normal action), Wound and Fatigue boxes and spending/damage/upkeep, and so on.

If you have any questions, please do ask! Any question you ask helps me in writing in clarity, because everything not understood is probably not explained well enough by me. ;)

Thank you!
